As one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Metropole requires a suitable Accident & Emergency Centre. None of the existing facilities in the city met the requirements so, as the start of the rationalisation of the health facilities within the metro, a new Accident & Emergency Centre is under construction at the Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth. This state of the art facility includes two emergency theatres, and Accident, Casualty and Medical Emergency Departments. A new Mortuary and a basement parking area, which can be utilised as a mass casualty overflow area, are also being provided. The design makes provision for a future new ICU, High Care and Trauma wards to be constructed at the upper levels of the building. To enable the construction of the new Accident & Emergency Centre a preparatory contract for R60 million for Demolitions and Temporary Works is presently concluding.
